How Long Does Microcement Last? Durability in Toronto Homes
Installed and maintained well, microcement lasts many years on floors and walls. What affects its lifespan, and the upkeep that keeps it looking good.

Installed on a sound base and maintained properly, microcement lasts many years. Owners commonly report 15 years or more on walls and floors. Its lifespan depends on the substrate, the system used, how much traffic it gets and whether the sealer is renewed.
What decides how long it lasts
The base
Microcement is only about 2 to 3 mm thick, so it follows whatever is underneath. A cracked slab or loose tile will show through. A stable, dry base is the biggest factor.
The system
A full system has primer, mesh-reinforced base coats, finish coats and sealer. Cutting coats to save time shortens the life of the surface.
The sealer
The sealer takes the wear. On busy floors and kitchen counters it wears down first, and once it does, the microcement underneath starts to mark.
Traffic and use
Hallways, kitchens and stairs see the most wear. Bathroom walls see very little.
Toronto conditions
Salt and grit tracked in during winter are hard on entry floors. Use mats at the door and clean up salt quickly. Indoor floors are not affected by freeze-thaw, but floors over unheated garages or slabs with moisture problems need checking first.
Upkeep that adds years
Clean with a pH-neutral product, never bleach or vinegar.
Use felt pads under furniture.
Put mats at entrances.
Reseal floors and counters every few years.
Repairs
Small chips can be filled and resealed. Worn sealer can be renewed without redoing the microcement.

Frequently asked questions
How long does microcement last?
On a sound base with a full system and regular resealing, microcement lasts many years, often 15 or more on walls and floors.
Does microcement crack?
It can if the base underneath moves or cracks. A stable substrate and mesh-reinforced base coats reduce the risk.
How often should microcement be resealed?
Every few years on busy floors and counters. Walls need it much less often.
Can worn microcement be repaired?
Yes. Small chips can be filled and the sealer renewed without redoing the whole surface.
