Microcement vs. Tile: Which Is Better for a Modern Toronto Bathroom?

Microcement gives a continuous, grout-free bathroom; tile is harder and cheaper to replace in sections. A side-by-side comparison to help you decide.

Microcement vs. Tile: Which Is Better for a Modern Toronto Bathroom?

Microcement is better if you want a continuous bathroom with no grout lines and want to avoid demolishing existing tile. Tile is better if you want the hardest possible surface, a very uniform look or the lowest maintenance over many years. Both can be fully waterproof when installed over a proper membrane.

Look

Microcement runs across floor, walls and shower in one surface, with soft variation from hand application. Tile gives a crisp, uniform look and a huge range of sizes and patterns, but always has joints.

Installation

Microcement can go over sound existing tile, so there is less demolition and dust. Tile usually means removing the old surface, new backing boards and more disruption.

Waterproofing

Both need a waterproofing membrane in the shower. Grout can let water through if it cracks, and microcement relies on its sealer staying in good condition.

Durability

Porcelain tile is very hard and scratch-resistant. Microcement is durable but can scratch or chip with heavy impacts, and its sealer wears over time.

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Microcement: no grout to scrub, but use pH-neutral cleaners and reseal every few years.

  • Tile: easy to clean surface, but grout lines collect soap and mould and need resealing or regrouting.

Repairs

A broken tile can be replaced if you have spares. Microcement repairs are possible, but a patch may show slight colour difference.

Cost

Costs vary with the size and complexity of the room. Microcement often saves on demolition, while tile can be cheaper on large, simple floors.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose microcement for a calm, continuous look, small bathrooms, curved walls or a renovation without demolition.

  • Choose tile for heavy-use family bathrooms where toughness matters most, or if you want a pattern.

Frequently asked questions

Is microcement better than tile for a bathroom?

It depends on priorities. Microcement gives a continuous look with no grout and can go over old tile. Tile is harder and easier to repair in sections.

Is microcement cheaper than tile?

It can be, mainly because it often avoids demolition. On large, simple floors tile may cost less.
