What is Venetian plaster & Marmorino?

Venetian plaster is a decorative lime finish made from slaked lime putty and marble dust, trowelled in thin layers and burnished so walls look like polished stone. Marmorino — “little marble” in Italian — is part of the same family: a matte or satin, stone-like lime plaster with gentle movement.

Venetian plaster vs. Marmorino — what’s the difference?

Both start from lime and marble. Traditional Venetian plaster is burnished to a deep, glassy, marble-like sheen; Marmorino is left matte or softly satin, with a slightly textured, travertine-like character. We help you choose the level of polish for each room.

Benefits of Venetian plaster

Beautiful and durable: lime hardens back into stone over time and lasts for decades. It is breathable, naturally resistant to mould thanks to its high alkalinity, low in VOCs, and instantly raises the perceived value of a room.

What makes Marmorino special

Venetian Plaster FAQs

All FAQs
What is the difference between authentic Venetian plaster and faux paint finishes?

Authentic Venetian plaster is formulated with genuine aged slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and finely pulverized Carrara marble. As it cures, it undergoes a carbonation process that reverts back to solid limestone. Unlike flat paint or synthetic faux coatings, it develops natural stone translucency, cool-to-the-touch smoothness, and remarkable depth.

Can Venetian plaster be used in high-humidity areas?

Yes. Natural lime plaster is naturally alkaline (high pH), which inherently inhibits mold, mildew, and bacteria. With an organic Marseille olive-oil soap or natural beeswax finish, it performs exceptionally well on bathroom walls, powder rooms, and ceiling features.

What types of Venetian plaster finishes do you offer?

We artisan-craft a full spectrum of finishes: ultra-smooth mirror-polished Grassello di Calce, satin-honed Marmorino, tactile travertine/stone textures (Intonachino), and metallic-infused mica washes tailored to your interior palette.

How is Venetian plaster repaired if scratched?

Minor marks can often be buffed away with micro-fine steel wool and beeswax. Deeper gouges can be spot-repaired by blending fresh lime paste matched to the original formula and burnishing into the surrounding coat.
