Can Microcement Go Over Existing Bathroom Tiles? A Toronto Guide
Microcement can go over sound, well-bonded tile, which saves demolition. How to check your tiles and what the preparation involves.

Yes. Microcement can be applied over existing bathroom tiles if they are firmly bonded, flat and free of cracks. It saves demolition and keeps floor heights close to where they are, since the system is only about 2 to 3 mm thick. Loose or hollow tiles have to be fixed or removed first.
How to check your tiles
Tap test. Tap each tile. A hollow sound means it has lost its bond.
Cracks. Cracked tiles or grout often point to movement below.
Moisture. Staining, mould behind grout or soft spots need investigating.
Flatness. Large lippage between tiles has to be ground or filled.
What the preparation involves
Deep cleaning and degreasing, especially around the shower and sink.
Fixing or replacing loose tiles.
Filling grout lines so they do not show through.
A bonding primer made for glazed tile.
A mesh-reinforced base coat, then finish coats and sealer.
Showers and wet areas
Old tile does not guarantee a waterproof shower. If there is any doubt about what is behind it, we add a waterproofing membrane before the microcement. Sometimes it is better to strip the shower and rebuild it properly.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put microcement over tiles?
Yes, if the tiles are firmly bonded, flat and crack-free. Grout lines are filled, a bonding primer is applied and a mesh-reinforced base coat follows.
Will grout lines show through microcement?
Not when they are filled properly and a reinforced base coat is used.
Is it cheaper to put microcement over tile than to remove it?
Usually yes, because it avoids demolition, disposal and new backing boards.
Can microcement go over shower tiles?
Yes, if the shower is sound. A waterproofing membrane is added when there is doubt about what is behind the tile.
