Limewash Paint vs. Regular Paint: Durability and Texture
Limewash soaks into the wall and dries to a cloudy matte; regular paint forms a uniform film. How they compare on look, durability, cleaning and cost.

Limewash and regular paint behave differently. Limewash is a lime mineral paint that soaks into porous walls and dries to a soft, cloudy matte. Regular latex or acrylic paint forms a plastic film with an even colour. Regular paint is more washable and cheaper. Limewash has more character, breathes and is very low in VOCs.
How they work
Limewash bonds with plaster, brick and stone and hardens as it cures. Regular paint sits on top of the wall as a film.
Look and texture
Limewash: cloudy, uneven colour with brush movement, always matte, changes with the light.
Regular paint: flat, consistent colour, from matte to gloss.
Durability
Regular paint, especially in eggshell or satin, is tougher against scrubbing. Limewash can rub slightly on dark colours and should not be scrubbed, but it does not peel the way a film can, and it is easy to refresh with another coat.
Breathability and moisture
Limewash lets water vapour out of the wall, which suits older homes and masonry. Regular paint can trap moisture and blister on damp walls.
Indoor air
Limewash has very low or zero VOCs. Many regular paints are now low-VOC too, but still contain acrylic binders.
Application
Limewash is brushed on in crossing strokes, usually in two or three coats, and painted drywall needs a mineral primer first. Regular paint is rolled on and quicker to apply.
Cost
Limewash usually costs more because of the material, slower technique and extra preparation. See our limewash cost guide for Toronto prices.
Which should you choose?
Choose limewash for living rooms, bedrooms and older homes where you want soft, natural colour. Choose regular paint for kids' rooms, hallways and anywhere that needs regular scrubbing. Request a free quote to see limewash samples on your walls.
Frequently asked questions
Is limewash more durable than regular paint?
Regular paint is more scrubbable. Limewash does not peel and is easy to refresh, but it should not be scrubbed.
Can you put limewash over regular paint?
Yes, after a mineral primer gives it a porous surface to bond to.
Is limewash more expensive than paint?
Usually yes, because of the material, brush technique and extra preparation.
